April 1, 2006
Anniversary Report By David A. Weiss

It’s that time of year again – when I subject all my friends to my annual State of the Territory treatise.

This April 1st begins our 42nd year in business and also marks two very major moves for our company.

After 32 years we moved our offices. We now are situated in a beautiful space more in tune with today’s modern equipment and requirements.

We also seized the opportunity to expand our territory. The folks at ArvinMeritor enlisted our services in the New England and Upstate New York Marketplaces. We are very fortunate to populate this new territory with three wonderful men. All are seasoned veterans from ArvinMeritor and we are looking forward to making great “reps” of all three.

As of this writing a combination of Bosch and Mann Filters has agreed to acquire the Purolator operation and Imco has purchased Maremont Exhaust. The other division is also up for sale.

The territory continues to shrink. Every six months another “local” chain agrees to be purchased by “Zone” or Advance. I’m sure it’s tougher and tougher for our local chains to compete against these national behemoths. Fortunately, all our customers are now aligned with one of the many “groups” that have sprung up. Hopefully, the combined buying power of these groups will allow our accounts to remain competitive. Sadly, two principals filed Chapter VII this past year, forcing us to seek replacement manufacturers. This endeavor is proceeding very nicely.

On a personal note, as most of you know, I have been “under the weather” since October and even missed my first Show in 45 years. But, thankfully, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and will be inviting all of you to a golf game in the near future - as long as you give me two extra shots a side.

In all of my annual notes, I always make a suggestion for the New Year. This year is no different. Being very old fashioned I have yet to get the hang of using emails for important decisions. So this year I am proposing email-less Fridays. Every Friday everyone “talks” on the phone or in person and solves the pressing issues of the week. I’m all in favor of emails for the mundane issues, but I have yet to see an email solve a real problem. Let’s get back to human interaction. It’s still the only way to do business.

My very best to all of you for a wonderful and healthy year.

Regards,

David
